Media Makes Fun of Wounds suffered by Marine Nick "Gunny Pop" Popaditch

The Imperial Valley Press (El Centro, California), which operates in the 51st Congressional District in California (right on the Mexican border, including part of San Diego), ran the cartoon reproduced here. Uncle Fester? A bald pirate? Drawing and than publishing an editorial cartoon like this is not only beyond contempt and sickening, but it screams out that someone thinks that Nick's campaign is serious, and that he might well derail the reelection of Bob Filner. Nick is the first real challenger Filner has ever faced.

CLICK HERE for a full article on Nick and the cartoon. Feel free to pass it along, and post on your own blog and/or tweet it.

Nick is also the author of Once a Marine: An Iraq War Tank Commander's Inspirational Memoir of Combat, Courage, and Recovery (Savas Beatie, 2008), and the recipient of the Silver Star.

Regardless of your politics, we believe that making fun of veterans who were critically wounded in the service of OUR country, is just wrong.

Arguing ideas and policy is one thing; making fun of the someone's loss of his eyes (yes, Nick lost one completely and 92% of the vision in his remaining eye and he is essentially deaf in his right ear after being hit in the head with a rocket after 36 hours of continuous combat in Fallujah), is simply despicable and demands a retraction.

Please let the The Imperial Valley Press know that you think the same thing.

OMG! What is wrong with some people? I called the paper and the lady said people have been calling and complaining and they are passing that to the editor.

Congressman Filner's office told me "we don't have a comment on that."

Don't have a comment?? You sit on the committee that helps veterans!

This issue alone could sink this guy. And if he won't stand up, it should.

Go Gunny!!

I myself called and left a brief message stating my disgust with the picture and thanking Mr Jennings for listening and posting a retraction to the picture. The entire message was done in a respectful and polite manner and I even left my number should he wish to call me. The key here folks is to call and be RESPECTFUL.

I was very respectful - I'm glad to see the editor regrets running the cartoon (it NEVER should have been run in the first place) and is apologizing. He better feel about 2 inches tall, because that's his stature as an American right now.

Right on the Mexican border?

I guess that is how Filner wins. It really helps his get out the vote campaign.

Main reason why I did not call is they don't deserve my respectful comments when something like this shows how disrespectful they are to a soldier who was wounded in action. What a disgrace.

No comment??? Hey Congressman, folks like Gunny are fighting to keep you free you imbecile.

I just read this. Its always a bad political move to critize honorable military service. I spent six years in the Corps and got out a SGT. A gunny with the type of responsibilities they have to deal with would be perfect in Congress, they get things done. Filner should have read Once a Marine before critizing his wounds. Maybe he would have thought before he acted.

Poppie, all: Filner is on the back cover. He ENDORSED Nick's book--much to his chagrin now.

Nick's new commercial.
