Fallujah--The Real HURT LOCKER

Posted by Richard Lowry, the author of the forthcoming New Dawn: The Battles for Fallujah (Savas Beatie, May 2010).

To the cast and crew of “The Hurt Locker,” congratulations and thank you for bringing this powerful message to the American public about an heroic EOD team working in Baghdad. This film provides a microcosm of what it is like to be fighting a 21st Century war in the Middle East. Imagine The Hurt Locker on an epic scale.

I suggest you read the rest here.

New Dawn is a very important book--consider the extensive operation as the Gettysburg of Iraq. I commend it to everyone who wants to experience modern warfare through the eyes of those who have to fight it: door-to-door, house-to-house, and street-to-street. Just reading the manuscript made me anxious, occasionally angry, and always proud.

One of the rubs of 'current war books', no matter how 'well-written' is that their goal cannot be immediacy; we've got the media for that, but to give readers 10 or 15 years from now a telling story of the meaning of the war experience.

Indelibility becomes Metaphor = TRUTH.

History is the quest not for facts and dates, but TRUTH.

Published more than half and century ago and written by a diehard Nazi, STUKA PILOT still flies because the book gives us a warrior's TRUTH.

We Americans need to find our own and deal with it.

This one is at the top of my list. My nephew and cousin both fought in Fallujah, one in April '04 and the other in November. My cousin said it was absolute hell on earth.
